VIOLETTE VISIONS EARLY LEARNING CENTER

BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT POLICY

At Violette Visions we believe in positive reinforcement as a method of discipline. Children need structure and consistency in a safe, loving environment in order to develop self-control and to learn to accept responsibility for their own actions. Children will be offered choices and allowed to verbalize their feelings. When appropriate, children will participate in the establishment of rules, policies and procedures. We stress the importance of respect for the individual rights of others while encouraging independence and self-expression.

*Discipline shall be consistent and developmentally appropriate.

*No spanking or other corporal punishment or physical abuse will be

used.

*No verbal abuse or humiliation will be tolerated.

*There will be no verbal, physical, or emotional neglect.

*Punishment will not be associated with food, naps, or toileting

*Children will not be force fed or denied food or snacks.

*No unusual or excessive toileting practices will be used. Children will not be forced to remain on the toilet or in soiled clothing.

*Teachers will act as positive role models for appropriate behavior.

*Behavior expectations and limits will be developmentally appropriate.

*Teachers will praise and encourage good behavior stating suggestions or directions in a positive way.

*Teachers will use a kind, firm voice when disciplining, focusing on the child’s actions rather than personality.

*The child will be made to feel worthwhile and respected, understanding that it is the action only that is being criticized.

*Teachers will act with confidence, fairness, patience, and consistency when disciplining.

*The child will be redirected, moved to another play area, when behavior is inappropriate.

*Time-Out will be used only for repeated misbehavior.

*Time-Out is a "cooling off" period lasting for one minute per year of age, allowing the child to think about the behavior.

*The teacher will explain to the child the reason for the Time-Out.

*Time-Out will occur within sight of the group and not in any specific area.

Parental involvement in the disciplinary process is necessary only when the behavior is repeatedly uncontrollable or harmful to the other children.
